Alvito is a village belonging to the district of Beja, Alentejo region and subregion of BaixoAlentejo, with about 1400 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with 260.93 km ² and 2708 inhabitants (2004), divided in two parishes: Alvito and Vila Nova da Baronia.
The Municipality of Alvito holds a wide range of products of recognized quality, such as wine, honey, olive oil, dry sausages, many of which have protected names, with a strong reputation in the domestic market.
The county also produces extensive livestock like sheep and cattle.
Alvito is a county with the potential level of built heritage, particularly in regard to cultural heritage and tourism, characterized by a distinct uniqueness and authenticity proven by the monuments and the identified archaeological sites that allow the development of sustainable tourism. The tourism of the region is guided by a set of quality accommodation, including the inn installed in the castle (which attracts many visitors) and rural tourism, two dams and some game reserves and tourist associations.
In Alvito and in all Alentejo there are natural conditions for the production of renewable energies, which have created a lot of expectations in this sector for development.
