Benasal, Castellón, Spain
Benassal is a municipality of Castellón, from the Valencian region, that has a population of 1,400 people with an area of 80 km2. Its main economic activity is based on several touristic services involved with its landscape and mineral water. It also counts on dry farming (nuts). In Castellón there is an important number of pig breedings, with 1,203,000 animals, thus resulting in excessive dung amounts. These is creating environmental pollution (nitrate, nitrites and phosphate pollution in surface waters and aquifers, destruction of micro-fauna, pests, gas emissions etc). In order to comply with the regulation, several actions are proposed with the objective to reduce the amount of by-products. The project will be developed in the North of Castellón, focused on 13 farms with 2,171 pork heads. The liquid fraction is intended for fertirrigation or even farming uses and the solid fraction is transfered to a central plant of biodigestion and biogas cogeneration produced in anaerobic regime.
